about the event

"Meridians of the Future – Casa dos Estudantes do Império in Coimbra (1945-1965)" introduces the Coimbra branch of the Casa dos Estudantes do Império, active in the city between 1945 and 1965. The exhibition offers a look at a space dependent on the Lisbon headquarters, but with its own specific features, which welcomed students from the then colonies and counted among its ranks several names of cultural and political significance.

The exhibition path focuses on the cultural and sporting activity developed in the House and by its members, on the shaping of African identities in that context, on the relations with other spaces and structures in the city, and on the surveillance and political persecution of some students. The exhibition also highlights the singular way in which the House and its members contributed to the politicization of a student milieu in transformation.

The opening takes place on 28 March, at 4:00 pm, with a guided visit by the curators. Admission to the exhibition is free and it can be visited at the Pedro Olayo (filho) Gallery, from Wednesday to Monday, between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm, with last entry at 7:30 pm.
