Meridians of the Future – Casa dos Estudantes do Império de Coimbra (1945-1965)

The exhibition Meridianos do Futuro presents the importance of the Coimbra delegation of the Casa dos Estudantes do Império, active in the city between 1945 and 1965. The exhibition offers a look at the students from the then colonies who passed through the Casa, some of whom played a decisive role in cultural production and, later, in political commitment linked to independence movements.

The journey highlights the cultural and sports activity developed in the Casa and by its members, the affirmation of African identities in the context of the time, the relations with other spaces and structures in Coimbra and, also, the political persecution and surveillance of some members. The exhibition also underlines the singular way in which this institution and its members helped politicize a student environment in transformation.

The opening takes place with a guided tour by the curators, Helena Wakim Moreno and Miguel Cardina.
