Auto da Barca do Inferno | Gil Vicente

After dying, a Nobleman, a Usurer, a Fool, a Shoemaker, a Friar, a Procuress, a Judge, a Prosecutor, a Hanged Man and four Knights arrive at a jetty and meet an Angel and a Devil, who will take them to their final destination: Paradise or Hell? What do they say to the Angel to persuade him to take them to the desired Paradise? How do they try to escape the Devil? And what will they really have done in life to deserve one fate or the other? Teatro Nacional São João invited Marta Pazos, stage director, set designer, visual artist and a central figure on the contemporary Spanish scene, to reactivate the exultant legacy of *Auto da Barca do Inferno* (1517), by Gil Vicente, a pivotal point in the Portuguese theatrical repertoire, with more than five hundred years of relevance.
