Coimbra Types — City Lights in Theatre Phase III

In the TAGV foyer, this exhibition presents the STATES sign, recovered within the scope of the Tipos de Coimbra project and now shown to the public for the first time. The work of Rafael Vieira and Liliana Marante begins with the rescue of signs and advertisements at risk of disappearing in the city, preserving them as pieces of graphic and urban memory.

In this third stage of the exhibition, the focus falls on an element linked to one of Coimbra’s mythical nightclubs. Founded in 1984 and transformed in 1986 by Jorge Peixoto into an alternative space, STATES marked the city’s cultural and musical life, with references to rock, punk, and post-punk, as well as the well-known Wednesday matinees that remained in the memory of several generations.

The exhibition also presents the material context of the sign, dated 1984, and highlights the restoration work carried out by Reclaneon, in partnership with TAGV, following a public fundraising campaign. The result is a meeting point between graphic heritage, local history, and artistic research around the city of Coimbra.
