QUARTETO DE CORDAS DE GUIMARÃES

SYNOPSIS:

The Quarteto de Cordas de Guimarães presents a programme that crosses different eras and musical worlds, bringing together Baroque elegance, Russian Romanticism, Argentine tango and the energy of Eastern European traditional music.

The concert opens with Francesco Geminiani's celebrated Concerto grosso “La Folia”, based on one of the oldest and most popular themes in European music. With great rhythmic energy and virtuosic brilliance, the work transforms a simple traditional melody into a vibrant sequence of variations full of contrast and imagination.

This is followed by Alexander Borodin's String Quartet No. 2, one of the most remarkable works of Romantic chamber music. Written with a deeply lyrical and intimate character, this work stands out for its warm melodies and the beauty of the famous movement Notturno, one of the most moving pages in the string quartet repertoire.

In Oblivion, Astor Piazzolla creates a melancholic and nostalgic atmosphere, crossing the tradition of Argentine tango with influences from classical music and jazz. The work develops with great expressive intensity and an intimate, contemplative character.

The programme ends with The Lark (Ciocârlia) by Angheluş Dinicu, a piece inspired by Romanian traditional music. Known for its impressive virtuosity, the work imitates the song of a lark, bringing the concert to a close with brilliance, energy and enthusiasm.

This programme reveals all the versatility of the string quartet, taking the audience on a musical journey rich in emotion, contrasts and different sound colours.

QUARTETO DE CORDAS DE GUIMARÃES

The Guimarães String Quartet (QCG), founded in 2016, is a pioneering artistic residency project aimed at developing a permanent offer in the field of chamber music from the city of Guimarães. Based on a series of regular concerts in the city and municipality of Guimarães, QCG's main objective is to invigorate and decentralize culture, promoting the city as a platform for its own cultural creation and serving as a cultural ambassador both in Portugal and abroad. The strong artistic identity that QCG has been developing, together with the creativity of its programming and the reach of the projects it develops, has created a brand recognized both by specialist critics and by the public.

In addition to its concert season in Guimarães, QCG has performed in several concerts at the Macau International Music Festival, at the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw, at the Bronislaw Huberman Philharmonic, Kielce Philharmonic (Poland), the Theodor-Zink Museum in Kaiserslautern (Germany), the Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi, and at the Baltic Neopolis (Poland), Musicales en Tricastin (France) and Varazdin Baroque Nights (Croatia) festivals.

In 2019 QCG founded the Guimarães Clássico Festival, which has the dual mission of promoting a series of concerts alongside important artists from the international scene, such as Vasko Vassilev, Roman Kim, Andriy Viytovych, George-Emmanuel Lazaridis, Konstantin Heidrich, as well as attracting young artists at the start of their careers to the festival's masterclasses and concerts. In 2023, 2024 and 2025, the festival received support from the Directorate-General for the Arts, which made its exponential growth possible.

QCG regularly performs alongside renowned musicians such as flautist Claudi Arimany, pianist Ronaldo Rolim, mezzo-soprano Wioletta Hebrowska-Klein and bandoneon player Marcelo Nisinman.
