Synopsis

From her fascinations and frustrations, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso embodies and subverts the archetypes of the “character ballerina” and the “mariachi” — characterized by being hyperdramatic, hypervirtuosic, and hypergendered. *Masterpiece* explores the excesses of both in the turmoil of nostalgic and Latin American associations, steering dance away from its legitimacy, legacy, and traditions. In collaboration with composer Peter Rubel and a profusion of loudspeakers — repurposed as sonic sculptures, carriers of emotions, and acoustic partners — *Masterpiece* addresses the poetics of building, deconstructing, repeating, interrupting, and abandoning dances and songs that try to exist between consonance and dissonance. — Luisa Fernanda Alfonso
