Rui Fernandes and the Viola Amarantina

Rui Fernandes is a Portuguese musician and composer, originally from Vila Real, who is dedicated to the valorization and reinvention of the viola amarantina, also known as the viola de dois corações. In 2022 he released the acclaimed double album A Viola Amarantina, showing that this traditional instrument can take on a solo role and dialogue with languages such as jazz, classical music and contemporary creation. His work focuses on exploring the expressive potential of the viola amarantina, developing a language of his own that combines tradition and innovation. His solo approach explores in detail the timbres, techniques and most authentic sounds of the instrument. His repertoire, entirely composed of original works, challenges the traditional use of the viola amarantina, affirming it as a solo, versatile instrument fully integrated into contemporary Portuguese music.
