Bonga
about the event
Bonga takes the stage with the intensity of someone who turned music into a testimony of freedom. Born José Adelino Barceló de Carvalho in 1942 in Kipiri, near Catumbela, he first became an athlete and represented Portugal in the 400 meters before establishing himself as one of the great voices of the Angolan diaspora. Exiled in Europe from the 1970s onward, he released *Angola 72* and reinvented semba, blending it with other influences and keeping Kimbundu at the center of his work.
The performance brings back this body of work made of memory, resistance, and journeying, on a night when Bonga returns to the festival eight years later, at 84 years old, with the same energy as always.
